Describing Alcala Gate in Madrid by Mª Angeles Márquez - 1º BACH - T

Alcala’s gate

The Alcala' gate is one of the most significant monuments of Madrid (Spain) with Cibeles's nearby fountain. It was ordered to construct for the king Carlos III and it is a work of the architect Francesco Sabatini. It is situated in the Independence Square crossing Alcala and Alfonso XII Streets, between others, ending with the Spain gate, which is the main entrance of the Retiro’s garden. I have chosen it because it is one of the most representative and important monuments of the city; it has served as support for all kinds of political and artistic manifestations and it is famous because in its surrounding areas numerous historical facts have taken place as:

- In 1921, close next the Door, the President of the Council of The Ministers, Eduardo Dato, was shot from a motorbike when he was travelling in his car after.

- During the Spanish Civil war the Alcala's gate was decorated by the republican authorities with portraits of Stalin.

- The street of Alcala has category of royal glen because for the Alcala's gate flocks of sheeps passed for many years.

- During the Christmas holidays, the Town hall of the city installs a Christmas crib under the central arch.

In this image, in the principal plane, we find Alcala's gate, there are red and pink flowers and lawn. In the background there are trees and the urban route. It was made of stone and it has five vain ones and ten columns. On the central vain there is an inscription and on the inscription there is a weapon shield supported two mythological creatures. There are children's sculptures in each side.
